Welcome
Looking for a unique setting to stay with a group of friends, collegues or your family? Then, the Saint Bartolomeus church in Diksmuide might be just the thing for you!
Bed & Bar Tolomeus is the first champing (church camping) of Flanders. With this exceptional accomodation, we aim to accomodate groups of max. 12 persons in a casual atmosphere and with a basic comfort.

Champing

What is champing?

The concept of champing originated in England. It stands for ‘camping in a church’. It is an ideal way to relive a church in a different way and to prevent church vacancy at the same time.

We offer our guests an unique experience to stay the night in a real church. All the original elements such as the church bell, the pulpit, the altar, the benches and the confessional, are still at the site. These can be used freely, with respect for their historical value, of course.

Because God sees everything 😉

Champing pods

Inside the church, there are 6 unique wooden sleeping huts, each of which can be used by two people. We carefully designed these ‘champing pods’ to highlight the architectural qualities of the neogothic church. For example, every pod has a patron saint watching over the guests. From inside the pod, one also has a unique view on the lit wooden barrel vault of the church.

Moreover, every pod offers each couple extra privacy vis-à-vis the rest of the group and the coziness to sleep comfortably in the large church. Four of these units have double beds (160 cm/63 in), the two others have single beds (80 cm/31 in). The six pods are always rented out together and cannot be booked individually.

Shared spaces

Enjoy the company of your fellow guests in either the sitting area, the dining area or the games room (table football, darts,…). The sanitary infrastructure consists of two separate units, each with a shower, sink and toilet. These units are shared by the entire group.

The kitchen contains the basic equipment such as an induction hob, sink, dishwasher, microwave, ample fridge and tableware for twelve people. Although there lacks an oven, guests can cook and/or heat simple items. Of course, the kitchen also provides a coffee machine, water boiler and toaster to prepare a breakfast to strengthen the inner man.

Until further notice, water is not yet being changed into wine (#John 2:1-12)

Homo Ludens - The Playing Man

Our church offers various other leisure options besides the bar with the games room. On the first floor, you can find the choir loft (where the choir used to sing). There, we provide a movie room where you can simply connect your laptop to a projector and chromecast to project a movie on big screen. The church has a 38m (125 ft) tall steeple. Those who dare can climb up the stairs all the way to the top, are rewarded with a wide panorama of the Westhoek region. Or sound the original church bell, confess your sins to each other in the confessional or preach to your company from the pulpit.

The Church

The Church of St. Bartholomew (Sint-Bartholomeuskerk in Dutch) is a typical reconstruction-era church. The original church and the village of Kaaskerke were largely destroyed during the Battle of the Yser in the First World War. After the war, a new church was built at a distance of 500 m (0,3 miles) from the original site. The original stones were reused in the new building. It is for this reason that this church does not have a graveyard.

Upon entering through the porch, the esthetic qualities of the church catch the eye. The balanced geometrical proportions, the intricately decorated stained glass window behind the original altar and the magnificently lit wooden barrel vault give this simple church its timeless beauty. The church has a surface of 540m2 (5.813ft2). Guests can freely use the large garden that surrounds the building. In a quiet area in the garden, guests will find two picnic tables, a few lounge chairs and outdoor games.

Food

- We work with a local bakery whom delivers a delicious, fresh breakfast. The breakfast includes fresh croissants, crunchy pistolets, a variety of spreads, yoghurt and orange juice. Coffee and tea can be made at site. Breakfast is €12 per person. Do you prefer to buy breakfast elsewhere or do you leave early in the morning? Don’t worry, it’s all up to you.

- Care for a picnic during your trip? At your request, a picnic can be delivered at the church in the morning or at an agreed upon hour and nearby location, so your food is still fresh. The picnic includes sandwiches, wraps, quiches and seasonal fruit and is provided by caterer ‘t Festijn for €17 per person.

- For dinner, the local caterer ‘t Festijn can indulge you. You can choose between a variety of warm menus or a cold buffet, with prices ranging from €15 to €39 per person. You pick the formula that suits your group best. The region is also home to several excellent restaurants. We can already recommend Water en Vuur, ‘t Notarishuys and Lettenburg.

Drinks

You are free to bring your own drinks if you wish. However, for your comfort we also provide an ample selection of drinks at reasonable prices. We especially recommend our selection of Belgian stock beers and wines.

In the summer (June-September), the terrace in front of the church is used as a summer bar. You are more than welcome to have a drink here as well. And don’t worry: the summer bar won’t bother you during your stay, since it opens at 1 pm and closes at 10 pm. The church itself will not be accessible to outsiders to guarantee your privacy.

Surroundings

Frontzate

Bed & Bar Tolomeus is located along the ‘Frontzate’. This historical front line from WW I is the recreative connection (for cyclists and walkers) between the coast (Nieuwpoort) and the Westhoek (Diksmuide).

Silent path

In the immediate surroundings of the church, there also is a so-called ‘silent path’ (stiltepad), a walking and cycling path which follows an old WWI trench connecting the village of Kaaskerke with the Trench of Death (dodengang). At the end of the silent path, there is a ferry service over the Yser during the summer months.

Cycling or walking

If you like cycling or walking, then Bed & Bar Tolomeus is definitely a good starting point to explore the region. We happily provide information about short and long tours. A visit to the historical center of Diksmuide is also worth discovering (the Grand Market, the beguinage, the Handzamevaart, Church of Saint Nicolas, Marina, fishmarket,…)

Tourist Attractions

Of course, there are also the classic WWI tourist attractions such as the Trench of Death, the Yser Museum (Yser Tower), the Vladslo cemetery with the ‘Treurend ouderpaar’ (‘statue of the mourning parents’) by Käthe Kollwitz,…

And finally, we recommend several very interesting nature reserves such as De Blanckaert and the Viconia.
